What is the weather like in winter in China?

Where can we breathe the cleanest air in the world?

While reading

Its winter in China. Time for warm tea and hot chocolate! But its also time for higher levels (程度) of air pollution, as coal heats (供暖) many homes across the country. Now if you dream of a place with super fresh air, imagine Cape Grim. It has the worlds cleanest air.

Its time for: 是该做…

Hurry up, it ’s time for the meeting.

He finally accomplished his dream of becoming a pilot.

Cape Grim is located (位于) in Australia, on the northwest tip of the island of Tasmania. Theres not much going on there. On the cliffside (悬崖边), looking out to the ocean, youll probably get blasted (猛吹) by the wind.

练习:

It will probably be a sunny day tomorrow.

You are probably right.

In 1976, the Australian government set up a research station (研究站) at Cape Grim to measure (测量) the air. They capture air from the Antarctic Ocean. This air is very clean. It has traveled for thousands of kilometers without hitting any land. This is why it is the global standard for clean air.

They set up a project to help homeless people.

capture:[ˈkæptʃə(r)] v.

The article captured the mood of the nation.

standard:[ˈstændəd ] n.

The government set the standard for water quality.

Our job is to find air as clean as you’re likely to find anywhere in the world and measure just how polluted it is,” Sam Cleland, who works at the station, told AFP.

as.as: 同…

I study as hard as my classmates.

The city is as busy as Shenzhen.

For example, scientists can measure climate change (气候变化) by looking at long-term changes in the composition   (组成) of this air. By the time we started measuring CO2 here in 1976, it was already up to 330. Since then we have come to where we are now, about 405,” Cleland said.

by the time: 到…

By the time you get there, the meeting will be over.

To stop this number increasing (增长) the world needs to pollute less. The island of Tasmania is setting a good example. In 2020, it became the first Australian state to generate 100 percent of its energy through renewables, such as hydropower (水力发电) and wind energy. It also plans to double its renewable energy production to 200 percent by 2042. It will send renewable energy to the Australian mainland (大陆).

set a good example:

I believe you can set a good example for them.

long-term: [ˌlɒŋ ˈtɜːm]adj.

You need to set yourself some long-term goals.

But its also time for higher levels of air pollution, as coal heats many homes across the country.

It has traveled for thousands of kilometers without hitting any land. This is why it is the global standard for clean air.

In 2020, it became the first Australian state to generate 100 percent of its energy through renewables, such as hydropower and wind energy.

1. energy   2. probably   3. capture   4. standard   5. renewable
