The International Kite Festival
Enthusiasts from all over the world fly their self-designed kites at the kite festival in Weifang, Shandong province.
The first Weifang International Kite Festival was held in 1984, six years after the beginning of the reform and opening-up. 
It served as a platform which appealed to both Chinese and foreigners.
As the festival got bigger, Weifang developed as well, establishing economic and cultural bonds with more than 190 countries and regions.
The festival has also boosted the development of Weifang's kite-making industry.

1. What are the unique features of the kites made by Yang Hongwei?
The cultural context behind her kites is unique.
On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common patterns like butterflies and swallows, but also some prints telling Chinese myths, legends and history.


2. What efforts has Yang put into making kites and spreading Weifang kite culture?
Having a special connection with kites, Yang learned the technique from her grandfather at the age of 16. After practicing the technique for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992. 
To create their portraits, she spent much effort and time checking historical records or discussing the details with professionals.
In her spare time, she also travels to different countries including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites.

How do you understand the title after reading?
Yang’s kites highlight Chinese culture, so when people fly kites, Chinese culture soars high with the kites. The “soaring culture” indicates the promotion of Chinese culture, including its kite culture.

What kind of person is Yang, according to the text? Use adjectives to describe her and give your reasons.

What inspirations can we draw from Yang’s story?
