  Automatic (自动的) doors, barrier-free (无障碍的) seats and bathrooms, Braille signage  (盲文标志) and audio (语音的) services for visually impaired (视力受损的) athletes － Beijing worked hard to provide Paralympic athletes with an all-round barrier-free environment.

  From March 4 to 13, around 600 Paralympians from 46 countries and regions(地区) competed in 78 events of six ice and snow sports in the Games. China sent its largest ever team, including 68 male and 28 female  athletes. They brought home the most medals(奖牌) in the country’s Winter Paralympics history.

  These athletes have benefited (受益) from the disability-friendly (残疾人友好型) environment, which got praise from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). “It has been a good few years of hard work, and it has been a challenge to provide accessible (便利的) Games. We are happy that the Games have been accessible since day one,” said Ileana Rodriguez, IPC accessibility expert.

However, creating a barrier-free environment should not be limited (局限) to the Winter Paralympics, commented (评论) China Daily. The idea is supported by a white paper titled China’s Parasports: Progress and the Protection of Rights, which was released  (发布) by the State Council Information Office on March 3.

  According to the white paper, among the 85 million people with disabilities in China, the participation (参与) rate in cultural and sports activities increased from 6.8 percent in 2015 to 23.9 percent in 2021. And as of 2020, a total of 10,675 accessible sports venues (场馆) had been built, 125,000 instructors (训练员) had been trained, and 434,000 households (家庭) with disabled people had fitness services.
