While reading

Without scissors or glue, making a deer (鹿) out of paper may sound impossible. But not for Du Jialei. He can fold paper into anything. The only limit (限制) is his imagination (想象力).

What is origami?

Origami is the art of paper folding. With nothing but a sheet of paper and your fingertips, you can create almost anything: birds, boats, or boxes. It doesn’t stop there, you can also make cats, cars, or containers. How about flowers, fans, or fish? You get the idea? The possibilities are endless.

 

Du, a student at Shanghai University, won third place at the ninth International Origami Internet Olympiad (IOIO, 国际折纸奥林匹克) in February.

win … place: 获得…名次/位置

Du first got into origami (日本折纸) as a child. Now he studies architecture (建筑学) at college. In his eyes, architecture and origami have something in common – they both use math and spatial (空间的) planning.

To design (设计) an origami piece, he must carefully consider the overall layout (整体布局). Each section of the paper should be imagined as part of the final work before it is folded.

They should be imagined as the participants in this experiment.

 

Then he needs to complete many small math problems to make sure everything is in the right place, such as the different angles (角度) and the lengths (长度) of the creases (折痕). It often takes hours or days to finish one work. But Du enjoys every little success. “You can only feel happiness as long as you get into it and stick to it,” he said.

It takes sb. some time to do sth: 做某事花费某人多少时间

In the competition, Du completed an original artwork, which scored highest among all of his 14 works. He was inspired by the emblem (会徽) of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. He also added a nautilus (鹦鹉螺) and a sailing ship.

While folding this piece, his biggest problem was the limited size of the paper, making it hard to plan out. Du made it through trials and errors (反复试验) with the help of his mentor (导师) Pei Haozheng, 25, who won the IOIO in 2017.

For Du, folding paper develops his ability to pay attention to both the bigger picture and the small details (细节). In Pei’s eyes, Du is a logical (擅长逻辑思维的) young man. “More importantly, he is creative as he has been challenging himself to make original works,” said Pei.
