Use one sentence to summarize the main idea of this part.
At his victory gathering, Macron said that his goal for the next five years is to make France more independent, make a stronger Europe and make France “a great green nation”.
He promised to cut air pollution, plant 140 million trees and develop a 100-percent electric car industry. He hopes to make France the first major country to stop using gas, oil and coal, according to Radio France Internationale.
What is Macron’s goal for the next five years?
How will he achieve this goal ?
Read the second part of the passage and answer the questions.
However, the result of the election may not be purely due to Macron’s appeal, with 70 percent of voters not voting for him in the first election round.
Addressing his supporters at the foot of the Eiffel Tower after the election, Macron thanked his voters and pledged to respond to the “anger and disagreement” of those who voted for the far -right. He also acknowledged that some French people voted for him not to support his ideas but to stop the ideas of the far-right.
The lack of popularity of either candidate can also be seen in the low participation rate in the second round of voting. The Ministry of the Interior in France said more than 3 million people cast blank votes because many of them didn’t want to vote for either of the two.
In what ways can we see the big divides among voters?
Read the third part of the passage and answer the questions.
Behind the remarkable election results, there are deep divides within French society being highlighted, noted the Week. The far-right candidate Le Pen increased her share of the vote from when she last ran against Macron in 2017. This increase in support for Le Pen shows a political divide in France. According to polls, the majority of blue-collar workers, young students and low-income voters support far-left or far-right parties rather than Macron’s centrist (中立派) position. The French public is unhappy with Macron’s administration (政府) after the country’s economic pains and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
