“Hi Dave, how are you today? Just thought I’d let you know what I’m doing,” they would read. Or “Sorry you’re going. I’ve had a good time and that would probably have had something to do with you, so thanks.”

In some ways, the relaxed attitude was shocking, says Melville. But it was a sign of how students’ understanding of their role has changed. “They have a more independent view of the university, and they feel free to comment,” said Melville.

A committee, led by Melville, was set up earlier this year to explore the change in students’ attitudes towards teachers.

“This is something being driven by young people,” said Melville. “They live surrounded by different kinds of electronic resources. They use social networking tools and things like Wikipedia. The first group of these students is now at university.”

Students do not regard teaching staff in the same way as previous students did. “Because Web 2.0, Google, Wikipedia are all about being able to change things yourself, students expect to be able to do this as well,” said Melville.

There have been other changes in the student-teacher relationship. If students choose to study through a social networking group, they are in control. They don’t always make staff welcome, and they are free to decide which staff members they allow in.

“Almost everybody who gets into using these kinds of technologies, it appears, becomes much shallower [in their research],” said Melville.

On my first day in America, I was excited, but nervous as well. It was my dear neighbor Susan who helped me get used to my new life far away from home.

There was a knock at the door. When I opened it, Susan came in with a home-made apple pie. She hugged (拥抱) me and said: “Aww, you must be the precious (珍贵的) Chinese doll (娃娃)!”

With a big smile, she went on: “Alice, I am sure you have never, ever tried a home-made apple pie before! You are going to love it so much!”

To be honest, I was greatly surprised by this welcome from a stranger. And the apple pie made me feel at home.

Susan was very helpful to me.

When I was thinking about a costume to wear on Halloween, she suggested I dress up like a traditional (传统的) Chinese girl. “I happen to have a traditional Chinese dress and guess what, I’m a great make-up artist!” she said. Susan did not hide (隐藏) her excitement, when, after an hour of hard work, she pushed me to the mirror to examine our work. The clothes fit me perfectly! I am sure that I stood out from the crowd that Halloween, and I am very grateful to Susan for her help.

My first Thanksgiving was another highlight. On the festival morning, I was surprised to find a gift box in my front yard. There was a note on it: “Hello Alice, I’m the Thanksgiving bunny (小兔子)! Enjoy your gift!” I looked around and caught Susan looking at me from her porch (走廊). Seeing that she had been caught, she awkwardly (笨拙地) picked up a newspaper and pretended to read it. I couldn’t help laughing. When I walked up to her, she said: “It was not me. It was the Thanksgiving bunny!” Susan is such a lovely person; she is the American above all others I need to thank.

I saw that the spirit of the Chinese saying, that “Neighbors carry more weight than distant relatives,” is alive and well in America. Susan filled my heart with warmth and joy, just as angels do.

In Yemen, you always see one type of vehicle (车辆) on the road: the water truck.

Private companies own the old, brightly (明亮的) colored trucks. They travel mountain roads and cross deserts to bring Yemenis a good more valuable than oil. It is one that only the rich can afford, with the supply regularly being cut off. Others must rely (依靠) on scarce (稀少的) rain or charity (慈善) to fight thirst.

Experts say Yemen is going to be the first country in the world to run out of water. The capital, Sanaa, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025, says a report by the World Bank.

Hannan, an 18-year-old from Lahej, said that only the rich could prepare for cuts in supply. “In a good week we’ll have a water supply all week but then the following week there will be water only for a day or two,” she said.

She and her husband, a factory worker, pay 3,000 riyals (99 yuan) for a week’s supply of water from a touring water truck when the taps run dry. With an income of only 20,000 riyals (660 yuan) a month, this means the family often spend half their money on water.

“There are a lot of people who can’t afford it and they have to rely on their neighbors to help,” she said.

Her neighbor, Anisa, 40, said: “When the water goes, it’s a sign of trouble in the community.”

The average person in Yemen survives on one-fifth of what the World Health Organization considers to be enough water.

Some women collect their families’ shower water and use it to wash clothes, and then recycle that same dirty water for the next load.

In Taiz, in the south, tap water is available only once every 45 days. In the mountainous Malhan district in the north, women and children climb a 1,500-m mountain to collect water from a spring, often in the small hours to avoid long queues.

Yemen is located in Southwest Asia, bordering (毗邻) the Arabian and Red seas. Yemeni people have lived on scarce water supplies for thousands of years but that problem has been made serious by conflict (冲突) in the area, the fast-growing population and the use of water to grow a drug called qat. With one of the world’s highest rates of population growth – 3.46 percent, Yemen is the poorest Arab country.

The government is considering desalinating (淡化) seawater, but this would be expensive and it may now be too late. The only other solution is to cut down on farming, but that means importing even more food.

10. The story aims to _____.

A. analyze the reasons why Yemen lacks water

B. suggest some solutions for the water issue in Yemen

C. present how serious the water problem is in Yemen

D. encourage the world to help Yemenis who are suffering from water shortage

11. Which of the following may be a reason why Yemen is short of water?

A. The country has had no rain for ten years.

B. The government has failed to reduce farming.

C. The population of Yemen is growing fast.

D. People can’t afford the water from government water trucks.

12. When Hannan said that only the rich could plan for cuts in supply, she meant that _____.

A. rich people drank more water than the poor

B. rich people could buy water from the water trucks if there was a water supply cut

C. she had a rich neighbour who often helped her during water supply cuts

D. the rich were not affected by water supply cuts

The job market in America is tough this year for teenagers looking for part-time work.

Restaurants, clothing stores and other businesses that usually employ teenagers are cutting people.

“I’d like to get a restaurant or retail (零售) job, but it’s almost impossible,” said Brandon Burson, who is 16 and a senior at El Camino Fundamental High School in Sacramento, California. “For every one job that opens up, there are hundreds of applications (求职信).”

The poor economy in the country has left many teenagers without jobs.

The city of Sacramento has a youth vocational (职业的) program, but it got far more applicants this year than it could take on, said supervisor (主管) Cheryl Rose.

“We had 735 qualified (合格的) youth applicants for 64 jobs,” said Rose. “So we’re not even hitting 10 percent of the need.”

In recent months the agency (中介机构) has also been getting applications from “very overqualified” adults who want to work with children, she said. “These are people with two master’s degrees, and they need work. A lot of people are out there looking.”

Part-time work for teenagers is about much more than earning pocket money, concerned people say. Studies have shown that the jobs give young people skills that will help them be more successful adults.

Kathy Chow, director of Hands On Sacramento, which posts volunteer opportunities on its website, said her agency has more young people signing on.

She noted that many schools now want youngsters to do community service. President Barack Obama has also called on more Americans to volunteer.

“Kids should look at volunteering really as their first job,” she said. “They are giving their time, learning leadership and interpersonal skills. They may not be aware (知晓的) of it, but they are learning how to network. This is what they did with their summer, and it looks impressive (印象很好的) to employers,” Chow said.

13. Why are teenagers finding it hard to find part-time jobs this year?

A. Because of changes in the economy.

B. Because many jobs require students to have master’s degrees.

C. Because of fewer vocational programs.

D. Because too many teenagers apply for the same jobs.

14. What can we learn from the article?

A. President Obama is unsatisfied with young volunteers.

B. Volunteer work can help equip young people for their future.

C. Some adults are overqualified because they want to work with children.

D. Young people don’t impress their employers due to their lack of community service.

15. What is the main idea of the article?

A. The US’s poor economy.

B. The need of young people for more jobs.

C. The hard time teenagers are having finding jobs.

D. President Obama’s call on Americans to volunteer.
