Day 1

What is a real ... (P4)

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Glamorous (迷人的) parties, beautiful cars and designer clothes… the life of a Gossip Girl character isn’t exactly what you’d expect for a 16-year-old high school student.

But the TV series and the original (最初的) books – which have just come to China from the Jieli Publishing House – follow Serena van de Woodsen and her elite (精英) set of friends in New York’s wealthiest district. 1

Blair, Serena’s best friend, is queen of the social scene at high school and she dates Nate. Chuck, meanwhile, is the “bad boy” of the story, exploiting (利用) his dad’s enormous wealth to get exactly what he wants.

However, some people criticize Gossip Girl for being silly and frivolous (无关紧要的). 2

And, based on my experience at high school in the UK, teenagers have more to worry about than what they’ll be wearing and who they’ll be taking to the latest Saturday night get-together.

For a start, you have GCSE exams to worry about. Each high school pupil will study nine or ten subjects over two years and then, at age 16, everybody has to sit an exam for each one.

3 After GCSEs come A-levels. I took three subjects – History, Italian and French – and was examined in each one when I was 18 years old. These are the exams that will determine whether you get into college and I, for one, found them very stressful.

4 I went to an all-girls school, but boys were the subject of our conversations a lot of the time. We’d discuss who we liked and occasionally some girls would even fight over boys.

But for the most part, Gossip Girl offers an insight (见识) into a world that most of us will never experience. 5

A. The slog (苦干) doesn’t stop there.

B. As an escape from reality, nothing beats it.

C. You’ll meet Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald.

D. After all that hard work the choice is yours.

E. After all, the action centers all around teenage relationships, clothes and partying.

F. The show was noted to have held the best audience retention of America’s Next Top Model.

G. That’s not to say there aren’t some similarities between my school experience and Serena and Blair’s.
