Article 1:

When I first met Terry I saw nothing special about him. However, as I got to know him better, I found him to be the kind of person who deserved (值得) respect and admiration.

I learnt of his great perseverance (毅力) in a recent English contest. He is popular in my class for his authentic (真正的) American English accent. To achieve this, he would get up as early as 5 o’clock in the morning to practice. He does a really excellent job in his daily report as well, speaking like an English news broadcaster (播音员).

I have learned that he is modest. We used to be deskmates, and he would always say to me: “Hey, your English is great!” and "But me, I still have a long way to go." He also told me that “You are better than me.” As you can see, he is the opposite of arrogant (傲慢). He is encouraging and respectful of others and disciplined (严格要求) with himself.

From the preparations for the school art festival I also saw his sense of responsibility and team spirit. When we were tired of rehearsing (排练) it was he who would renew our enthusiasm (热情) with his passion (激情) for the project.

Even when it was dark outside and no one could see properly he would still be struggling to read the script. And at the end of our efforts, it was he who clapped the team and thanked everyone for their hard work. Although he was not the leader of the group he gave the production his every effort – all for the benefit (利益) of the class.

That’s my classmate Terry, who is hardworking, modest and responsible. He is definitely worth making friends with.

Article 2:

One year ago, I came to this strange city called Yuci for my studies. I was very lonely, until I met Huahua – my best friend.

I entered the classroom just as the teacher was arranging the seats. It was then I saw her. She was alone, too. Later she happened to become my deskmate.

Once I got a bad cold and was also suffering terribly from homesickness (想家). It was as if Huahua could read my mind. After school, she came to see me. Not only did she help me go over the lessons, she also told me jokes. That afternoon we talked, laughed and enjoyed ourselves. Since then we have had no secrets from each other.

My birthday was coming and I thought there would be no one to celebrate it with me. But to my surprise, on the day, Huahua had prepared a birthday cake! The tear welled (涌出) up in my eyes. I was blessed to have such a great friend.

Her birthday is coming, and I heartily wish her: Happy Birthday!

If it had not been for you, I would never thought my life could change.

But you stand right beside me, support me, encourage me, and share my happiness, but sadness too. Yes, Zoe, there is only you.

I remember the day I met you. We were on the bus back home from the camp for military training (军训). I was sitting while you were standing, looking at me, and smiling. Then you said something and I responded (响应). I didn’t know why but we were attracted to each other like magnets (磁铁) and built a friendship, little by little. When it was my birthday you were the one I wanted to celebrate it with. When you had doubts you would share them with me. If I started a new relationship I would talk to you first. If you had a crush (迷恋) on someone, you would come to me to ask for advice.

Yes, Zoe, it is always you.

Thank you, for giving me so many precious memories. Thank you, for being someone who I could learn from, since you are a teenager like me. Thank you for reminding me of my goals and pushing me to achieve them. But mostly thank you for being my best friend.
