How to talk to someone

new (P5)

Cloze

If you meet a young woman for the first time, will you call her “Miss” or “Ms”? Or will you just use her first name?

You may not know how to use titles (头衔)

1 talking to someone. Don’t worry. Nowadays, the Western media (媒体) uses titles less and less. The US reporter Jason Gay says titles 2 be a tricky (棘手的) thing. For example, a 3 on a Manchester United (曼联) soccer game could read like this: “Mr Giggs passed to Mr Fletcher. Mr Fletcher found Mr Rooney on the right, Mr Rooney then scored (进球)!” Tricky, right?

But what should you, as 4 English learner, do when addressing (称呼) someone? If you’re 5 to someone of the same age, then first names are fine. However, if someone has a title, such as Doctor or Professor, call him or her by title and last name.
