Passage 1
Wonder why you can get angry so easily while your friend smiles all the time? It’s probably because you both have different personalities.
Personality is also about how people think, behave, and react (反应) to everything around them from day to day.
So what makes people think and behave in certain ways?
Part of the reason is that people are born like this. A baby gets its blood type, genes (基因) and other physical things when it’s still inside its mother. These things may help decide what the baby will be like.
But one’s personality doesn’t stop here. Family life, school learning and life experiences can also make you the person you are. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible to change your personality. You can always try to make yourself better. Don’t get too worried about your shortcomings (缺点). Just accept (接受) them. This is a good way to start making changes.
If you don’t know how to make friends, find out why. Is it because you’re too shy? Tell yourself to smile at people. Start talking to people using warm greetings (问候).
Don’t give yourself a hard time about it all. It’s not easy to change lifelong habits in one night. Keep working at it. One day you’ll see that you can turn over a new leaf and be a new you!

D. how you react to something

A. People are born the way they’ll always be.

3. From the last two paragraphs, we learn that _____.
A. a shy person can’t make many friends
B. there is no way to change your lifelong habits
C. you can work hard to improve yourself
D. everyone can change him- or herself in life
Passage 2
When I go to nearby parks I often see people playing ball games. Parents cheer for their kids, and coaches teach the players. The coaches are all volunteers. They spend their time organizing and coaching the games. I can tell that it takes love and devotion (奉献) for them to do this.
In my swimming club, I never really thought of my coaches in that way. They get money for their job. But now, I see something similar in them and people who give their time to help others.
A few months ago, Anja, one of our coaches left the team.
She really enjoyed her work. But, as a coach, her schedule was troublesome: three hours in the evening away from home and a lot of weekend swim meets. She had very little time to spend with her husband and children.
Then, last week, Jory, our head coach, said he would also be quitting (辞职) his job! He said he and his family needed more time together, and that the head coach job was hard! Almost every day, there would be morning and evening classes. Every class would last one or two hours. The result: Coach Jory would hardly ever get to go home.
But, he was also sad to leave. He told us this:
“I’m not leaving because of anybody or anything about the team. I’m leaving because my wife and I have decided we need more time together. I’ve been a coach here for four years and I’m glad to have seen so many good swimmers in this club!”
As we wait to hear who the new head coach will be, we won’t forget coach Jory’s words. Our swimming coaches may be paid, but the devotion and love that they show make them the same as the coaches I see at the park, and all other volunteers.
1. The writer thinks the volunteer coaches in the park are _____.
A. careful and skilled
B. kind and helpful
C. lovely and talented
D. skilled and hard-working
2. According to Paragraph 2, the writer _____.
A. didn’t think highly of his coaches before
B. thinks his coaches are better than the volunteer coaches
C. thinks his coaches get too much money for their job
D. thinks his coaches don’t give enough time to their work
3. The coach Anja left the team because _____.
A. the students didn’t like her
B. she didn’t make much money
C. the job took up too much of her time
D. her workplace was too far away from her home
4. The head coach Jory will quit his job because _____.
A. he can’t do his job well
B. he doesn’t like some of his students
C. he doesn’t like the job any more
D. he wants more time to spend with his family
Passage 3
Do you feel lonely when your best friend isn’t around? Here’s our advice to you – and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around – maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel left out at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has his or her friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom – think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help – and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left: You can introduce him or her to your new friends!
1. Which of the following can explain the expression “feel left out”?
A. feel homesick B. feel lonely
C. leave home alone D. be hungry
2. According to the writer, some kids feel lonely at break because they _____.
A. have trouble with their studies
B. don’t have their best friends around
C. need their parents to be with them
D. are too young to look after themselves
3. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 means _____.
A. sharing your ideas
B. talking in front of many people
C. studying better at school
D. developing new friendship
4. Some kids need help from teachers to make friends because _____.
A. they miss their old friends a lot
B. they have no time to stay with others
C. teachers know who wants a new friend
D. they are shy or not good at making friends
