Penguins are among the most popular of all birds. They only live in and around the South Pole and the continent of Antarctica. No wild penguins live at the North Pole. Though many people imagine a small, black-and-white animal when they think of penguins, these birds actually come in a variety of sizes. The smallest penguin species is the little blue penguin. These birds weigh only 1 kg. The largest penguin is the emperor penguin. It weighs 27-40 kg. According to a report, there are 19 different kinds of penguins and none of them can fly. Penguins only eat meat. They have to be able to survive in some of the Earth’s coldest and windiest conditions. They can spend up to 75 percent of their lives in the water. They do all of their hunting in the water. Penguins are great swimmers and have thick layers of fat to protect them from the bitter cold. Even in their freezing cold habitats, penguins still have to watch out for predators such as killer whales and seals.
