On March 17 the color green will spread all around the world in celebration of St Patrick’s Day. The Irish (爱尔兰人) traditionally wear something green on this day, as the color is associated (有联系的) with Ireland. 1
Usually these jokes will be about Irish stupidity, their famous thirst (渴求) for alcohol, or their reputation for telling tall (untrue) tales. These characteristics are all based on the most common Irish stereotypes (成见): that the Irish are hot-tempered (脾气暴躁的) drinkers who love to fight and will do anything to avoid a day’s work.
2 These stereotypes may have rung true back in the 19th century when they started, but they’re far from true today, with the exception, perhaps, of the drinking.
Today, the Irish are admired for their storytelling ability, musical talent and strong education. 3 Or that many of the most famous music acts of all time, such as singer Enya and rock band U2, were Irish born and bred. And in December, Ireland’s education system was ranked 11th in the world in a new global top 50 ranking, website independent.ie reported.
4 .They can be traced (追溯) back to the 19th century, which was a very bad time to be Irish.
At that time, Ireland was poverty-stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the US to escape famine, but there they had to compete – occasionally with their fists (拳头) – for jobs and housing with other immigrant (移民) groups. It was on the US’ streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fighting.
5 Drinking in Ireland is a predilection (偏好), but it’s not necessarily something to criticize. It was the Irish after all who created one of the world’s best-loved beers Guinness.

A. Why do Irish people love to drink so much?
B. So where did the negative Irish stereotypes come from?
C. Today, few Irish are interested in this tradition.
D. However, one bit of the Irish stereotype is still true, their love of drink.
E. The real joke, however, is that these negative Irish stereotypes still exist.
F. It’s no accident that several of the greatest writers of the 20th century were Irish.
G. Another St Patrick’s Day tradition is for the non-Irish to make jokes about the Irish.

Day 5
从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
1. I saved the files in the ______ that they would be useful in the future.
A. expectation B. determination
C. situation D. convenience
2. We are ready to ______ to prevent air pollution.
A. take effect B. take action
C. take place D. take turns
3. The house was too expensive and too big for us to buy at the time. _____, I’d grown fond of our little rented house.
A. Somehow B. Instead
C. Otherwise D. Besides
4. He kept talking and talking. She finally ______ him by saying she had to make dinner.
A. got used to B. got hold of
C. got rid of D. got back to
5. – I need to advertise for a roommate for next term.
– ________? Mary has already said that she wants to live with us.
A. Why bother B. Why not
C. So what D. What for

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
After a few weeks in China, I started to notice something strange at the dinner table. I was in a restaurant with my friends when, beside us on another table, a group of four men started shouting at each other and 6. _______ (wave) their money around. I finally learned that they were actually “fighting” to pay the bill!
This scene made me think of 7. _______ it would look like in Britain. It would be almost unheard of. British food culture usually implies that you pay for whatever you ordered. In a British restaurant, you usually just pay for 8. _______. It’s called “splitting (分开) the bill” or “going Dutch (AA制)”.
I guess there is one reason that could explain some of the 9. _______ (different) between East and West. How you pay the bill depends on how you order, as well as how you eat. Usually in Chinese restaurants, the group decides on each dish, 10. ______ the group eats all of the dishes. Can you imagine 11. _______ (try) to work out how much each person needs to pay if you’re all sharing?
The opposite is true 12. _______ eating out in the West. Each person chooses the food that he or she wants. Sharing isn’t commonly practiced. So it’s simple to pay for what you ordered.
I 13. ________ (person) enjoy both practices. It’s nice to treat your friends to dinner sometimes. And it’s also nice 14. _______ (treat). And on days when I miss Western food, I know there’ll be 15. _______ “fighting” over who should pay!
