    第三部分 阅读理解 (每小题3分,满分15分)

Wang Xiaoxia never sang to her classmates, nor could she hear the cries of her parents. She committed suicide(自杀) a few days after the start of the new semester. She could not bear being downgraded from her "key class" at school.

The death of the Senior 2 student in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, challenges the long-existing "key school and key class" system in China's high schools.

The system dates from the 1950s, when New China was thirsty for talent to rebuild the nation. The most promising students were gathered together to be taught by better teachers and study in better environments.

The system produced outstanding students in a short time. But it entailed (使承担) a loss of benefits for more students. The system began a dangerous cycle in the nation's schools.

"Key schools or classes" get more financial (财政的) and teaching resources. This leaves "non-key" students behind. The system has a negative psychological impact (心理影响) on students. In many schools, high exam scores are the only passport to "key classes". Fierce competition to get into and stay in such classes places students under great pressure with every exam.

As the old saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." In some "key classes", students are less healthy because of using all their time to study hard. Classmates treat each other as competitors rather than friends. Trust, team spirit, and friendship can hardly survive in such a tough environment.

School shouldn't be just a place to gain knowledge but also to learn to be a qualified (合格的) citizen. Equality is one of the most important things that students should learn. But how can they, if they are treated unfairly at school? Each teenager should have equal access to education, both for his or her own future and that of the country.

    51. The story of Wang Xiaoxia was used ______.

    A. to show the great pressure students have to face

    B. as an example of low self-esteem (自尊)

    C. to show the down side of the "key school and key class" system

    D. as an example of the many teens who kill themselve

    52. We know from the passage that _______.

    A. the key school system helped in rebuilding New China B. all the promising students can go to key school

    C. most students benefit from the key school system

    D. key schools or classes get more financial support because they have better teacher

    53. Which would the author agree to?

    A. Too much importance has been put on exams in schools.

    B. High exam scores are important if a student wants to get into a key school.

    C. It's time to reconsider the "key school and key class" system.

    D. A competitive society calls for a "key school and key class" system.

    54. The saying "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" _______.

    A. means that becoming a slave to work doesn't make you clever

    B. warns Jack that he will become an uninteresting boy if he works hard

    C. means that students will become bored if they play all the time

    D. warns someone that they will not be an interesting person if they work all the time

    55. The author's attitude towards the key school system is ________.

    A. positive B. negative C. neutral D. not mentioned
