What is the difference between how people see chain restaurants in China and the UK, according to the author?
AnswerIn China, chain restaurants – especially the big multinational ones – are seen as cool, gourmet (美食) and fashionable. In the UK, by contrast, they people usually go to them when they have no other option.

Independent cafes and restaurants are becoming as popular as they used to be.
Answer: Independent cafes and restaurants are making a comeback on the fashion scene.

1. What do you do when an itch strikes?
2. Why does scratching stop your skin from itching?
II. Fast reading
What is the conclusion of the recent study?
The feeling of relief that comes from scratching an itch does not come from your skin, but from inside your spinal cord.
III. Careful reading
Put the following events in order.
  1. As a result, it could no longer send signals to the brain telling it about the itchy feeling.
  2. The activity in part of the monkey’s spinal cord started to become very strong in response.
  3. Scientists injected a kind of chemical called histamine into a monkey’s legs to make them itchy.
  4. The scientists scratched the itchy legs and found that the activity in the spinal cord quickly weakened.

Question:
1.Does scratching get rid of all itches?
No. Scratching might make things more comfortable for small, ordinary itches, but for people with more serious diseases, it can make matters worse.
2. What is the significance of the study?
The findings could help scientists develop medicines that act the same way as the spinal cord to stop itching.
