Dangerous fats (5a)

I. Pre-reading

Do you eat these foods a lot?
Do you know what trans fats (
反式脂肪酸) are?

 

II. Reading

Read the passage and answer these questions:

1. How were trans fats first created?

2. How are trans fats harmful to our bodies?

3. What measures have been taken to control trans fats in some countries?

2. Eating trans fats increases our levels of bad cholesterol (胆固醇). It is a leading cause of heart disease, strokes and high blood pressure.

3. The US FDA ruled that food labels should list the amount of trans fats.

Canada and Brazil require food labels to state when more than 5 percent of trans fat is in products.

In China, the amount of trans fats in baby food is required to be less than 3 percent. And from January of this year the level of trans fats has been highlighted (明显标出) on food labels.

IV. Structure

Look at the sentences below and pay attention to their structures.

 当状语从句(时间、条件、转折等)的主语与主句的主语一致时,从句的主语可以省略,谓语使用非谓语动词形式。“连词(如when, while, if等)+分词”结构是高考重要考点,主要考查动词的正确形式。这可以根据分词与其逻辑主语的关系来确定:如果是主谓关系,用“连词+现在分词”;如果是动宾关系,则用“连词+过去分词”。

 

例如:

Looking better together

  A new study has found that people look more 1.____ when seen with others than when 2.____ as individuals (单个人) – a phenomenon known as the “cheerleader effect (啦啦队效应)”.

In the study, researchers did an 3.____ in which participants (实验参与者) were shown pictures of 100 people. Each person was shown in a photo alone and then in a photo with other people, and participants were asked to rate their attractiveness.

  Researchers found that people in groups almost always got 4.____ ratings. The alone picture would even look better if it was put among other faces, reported The Atlantic.

The study also noted that this effect did not 5.______ on the number of faces in the group. Any size of group would do.
