Because we need a lot of time to weigh costs and benefits, and we have to pick one, no matter how unwilling we are to give up the others.

The lateral habenula is a tiny area in our brains.

It is to “blame” for the difficulty of decisions, and is linked to depression.

They started making choices randomly, as if they had no idea which choice might be better for them.

4. Why do patients seem happier when the lateral habenula is shut off?

When this region is shut off, patients might care less about what makes them depressed.
