2. Talking about social class helps first-generation students to understand how their own backgrounds matter in college, what unique difficulties they may face, and see that people like them can be successful.
Talking about social class是动名词做主语;其余部分为help ---to understand --- and see ---.

1. Apart from universities’ help, it’s very important that students use any resources (资源) their schools and education programs offer.
apart from: in addition to; as well as 除了---外

It’s very important that---为虚拟语气句式,从句中用sb. (should) do---
2. Catherine Parkay, research programs director at an education company, advised younger students to act now to set themselves up for a successful future.

3. More often than not, when students seek (寻找) help, their inner motivations (动机) will guide them the rest of the way.
more often than not: usually; as a rule
e.g. Ben is a fairly good runner, so he wins more often than not. 本是个相当不错的赛跑选手, 他常常跑赢.
