IV. Sentence structure

Read the sentences and pay attention to their structure.

1. This is because the Internet connection in space comes from a network of satellites (卫星) – the same satellites that NASA engineers on the ground use to communicate with astronauts on the International Space Station, according to The Atlantic.

because 引导的是表语从句。

that引导的是定语从句,先行词前有the same, such, so 或as时,定语从句往往用as引导,但此处用that引导 ,注意区别:

This is the same bag that I lost yesterday.

这正是我昨天丢失的书包。

2. This means that, even though the connection on the ground is fast, the signal is slow to go from space to Earth so the Internet runs slowly.

even though 引导的是让步状语从句,意为“即使”,还可以用even if。

Eg. Even if we achieve great success in our work, we should not be too proud. 即使我们在工作中取得了巨大成绩,也不应该自满。

3. It’s a “much faster” way to send data, NASA said, and one that shows the possibilities for the “future of communications to and from space”.

One 指代前面的a way, 其后的that引导的是定语从句。

V. Vocabulary

1. So what makes the connection so slow compared with broadband (宽带) Internet speeds on the ground?

compared with: 跟---相比,在句中作状语,相当于一个时间或条件状语从句。

Eg. 1) This room is much bigger, compared with that one.

   2) Compared with more advanced countries, (=If/When our country is compared with more advanced countries,) we can see that our country still has a long way to go.

VI. Discussion

Do you think that communications in the future will be fast? Why or why not?
