•Silicon Valley is a nickname for the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area, in the northern part of the US state of California.

•Silicon Valley——硅谷是旧金山湾的南部的部分地区的绰号,这是位于美国加利福尼亚州的一部分,称为北加利福尼亚。世界上许多最大的高新技术企业,以及成千上万的初创公司聚集于此。

•Unlike The Big Bang Theory, Silicon Valley does not set out to embarrass its nerds but rather to empower them.

3.What kind of world does Silicon Valley present?

•It presents a world where failure is common and success is hard-won. It’s a place where even the guy working at the liquor store has an idea for a mobile app.

•It focuses on the latest trends of startups, software and apps.

 

5.How are people in the tech world different from people in Wall Street? 

People in Wall Street focus on making money. But in the tech world, people will also think about how they can benefit the world. 

 

IV. Language focus-----sentence pattern

1. The show is currently airing its fourth season, with The Guardian calling it “the best and only comedy you should be watching”. 

Note:

•with The Guardian calling…是”with+宾语+宾补”的独立结构。you should be watching是定语从句,省略了关系代词that.

•Can we say “the best and only comedy *which you should be watching”?  Why?

 

2. He decides to turn his idea into a company, which is when all the drama begins.

Note:

•which is…是一个非限制性定语从句,which指代前文整句内容。when all the drama begins是when引导的表语从句。

 

3. If you’re in Wall Street, you’re kind of unashamed about how much money you’re making.

Note:

•be ashamed of/ that/ to be/ to do 对…感到惭愧/羞愧

•how much money…作about的宾语从句。

1.What’s the difference between the old and the new Wonder Woman?

In the past, Wonder Woman was only a male projection. She had a highly sexual appearance that was made to appeal to men. However, the new Wonder Woman is a hero for women. She tries to fight for opportunities for women. 

 

2.Why does Wonder Woman ignore patriarchy? 

Because she grew up on a far-away female-only island, she doesn’t know what the social expectations for women are and doesn’t care when she finds out. She is an independent woman who wants to live in her own way. She also won’t apologize for being a woman. 

 

3. What does “It’s a battle with oneself to change the way the world works” mean?

It means that Wonder Woman has to act alone to change the way people treat women and to subvert the patriarchal society. It’s not an easy task to do, so she has to work hard.

The author learned to speak up and to help others to speak out.

 

Read the article carefully and answer the following questions. 

1.What is the possible reaction of people when they hear the story of the author’s childhood? 

People would be amazed. They would say: “Are you serious? ”

2.What did the author learn to do in his childhood?

The author protected himself by not speaking up. 

3.How bad was the author’s childhood?

He was treated badly and hurt. His name was changed at least three times, he lived in van when he was between colleges, he was full of anxiety, depression, and even wanted to kill myself.

4.Did the author change himself later? How did he do it?

Yes, he will complete his doctorate and become a widely published author now. He learned to start speaking up for himself and then he got help from people around him.

5.What is the hope of the author now? 

He hopes that sharing his story will help others see what is possible, even in the darkest of times, and help others to speak out. 

6.What lesson did the author learn from his life experience?

He’s learned that if we can hold on and find help, if we find ways to get through the day and speak up, we'll not only survive, but become stronger than before. Our very survival can be an inspiration all on its own.
