Warm-up Discussion: •Do you know the meaning behind the following place names? •Do you know what your hometown’s name means? Share with your fellow classmates. Actually, in many countries, people can confidently tell you the meaning of their town or city. But how about people who live in Manchester, Oxford or Birmingham? Could they explain what the name of their city means? II. While reading •Scanning: Read the article and answer the following questions. 1. Could people who live in Manchester, Oxford or Birmingham explain what the name of their city means? And why? Most people wouldn’t be able to explain what the name of their city means. Every British town and city has a long history. 2. What do the place names “Britain” and “Llantrisant” have in common? Both of them come from Celtic. 3. How many ways are there to explain the meaning of London? What are they? Three. First, the Romans called the city Londinium but they were not the first inhabitants. Second, people once believed that the United Kingdom's capital city got its name from the castle of a King called Lud but this is very unlikely. The best guess today is that the name comes from a Celtic word meaning a fast-flowing river. Reread the passage.
