Stephen King,
who is nicknamed “the king of terror”. 
The Shining (《闪灵》) is one of his world-famous works. Today we are going to learn about Stephen King and his terrifying works. 
 
II. Fast reading
Read the article quickly and and answer the following questions.
1. What was the turning point of Stephen King’s writing career?
    Just as he was about to give up, his wife’s good judgment was the turning point. She rescued a few pages of a story Stephen King threw away, and the result was Carrie, a bestseller and later a movie that made a fortune at the box office. 
    Since then, a vast number of novels and stories have flowed from King’s pen, making him one of the most famous and successful writers in the world. 
2. Why are JK Rowling and George R.R. Martin mentioned in the text? 
   To emphasize that Stephen King is as popular as them. He is one of the most famous and successful writers in the world.

Sentence understanding
“King also has many strings in his regular literary bow.” (Para 8) 
 What does this sentence mean?
It means that besides horror stories, Stephen King is also good at writing other types of stories, such as his most famous non-horror story, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.

making在句中作结果状语.
-ing形式作状语,可以表示时间、原因、结果、条件、让步、伴随等。如: 
Hearing the bad news, he got frightened.  时间状语

Mary failed all her exams, making her parents very angry.  结果状语 
Working hard, you will succeed.  条件状语 
Working so hard, he failed again.  让步状语 
He sat in the chair, reading a newspaper.  伴随状语 
注意:only to do用来表示意料外的结果状语。如: 
Yesterday I went to see him, only to learn that he had gone abroad two days before.
2. Despite turning 70 this year, the author shows no sign of slowing down, and neither should he. 
despite在此处为介词,后接名词、名词短语或代词,与in spite of同义,表示“尽管”、“虽然”、“不顾”。更多例句,如: 
Despite numerous failures, they continued to conduct the experiment.
Despite his lack of experience, he got the job.
We were there on time, in spite of the rain.
In spite of careful checking, there were still mistakes in her essay.
注意:although/ though为从属连词,后面需要接从句。如: 
Although he is nearly 70, he is very energetic.

Ⅶ. Discussion 
Look at the last sentence of the article, “King is a man who loves to write books, and he’s frighteningly good at it.” Why did the author choose the word “frighteningly” here? 
“Frighteningly” is used here to stress King is extremely good at writing horror stories. The word comes from “fright”, reflecting the feature of King’s novels.

Search the internet to learn more about Stephen King’s books. Write a short article describing your impression of the writer.

1. What is an advantage of human gene editing technology?
With the technology, diseases or birth defects could simply be “edited out” in the future. 
2. What are people’s concerns about gene editing?
Besides some ethical concerns, such as so-called designer babies or greater inequality, they believe we still don’t understand genes enough to give an unborn child greater brainpower or better abilities.
