I. Lead-in
Do you know the Statue of Liberty in New York?
Do you know what it symbolizes?
The world famous Statue of Liberty, which stands on Liberty Island in the Hudson River next to New York City, was a gift from France to the United States. It symbolizes freedom from oppression.
What colour is the Statue of Liberty?
Blue-green.
Did you know it was brown when it was built?

II.Skimming
Read the passage quickly and answer the question.
Why did the colour of the Statue of Liberty change from brown to green?
The color change is the result of oxidation (氧化) and air pollution.
Oxidation is a process where a material or substance (物质) is changed after being exposed (暴露) to oxygen (氧气) and water in the air. Over a period of several years, this can result in the creation of a blue-green layer (层), known as a“patina (铜绿)”.

III. Scanning
Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.
1. What stands out in our minds when we picture the Statue of Liberty?
Key: Its brilliant color, a striking shade of green, always stands out in our minds.
2. Why was the Statue of Liberty more of a traditional brown color upon completion in 1886?
Key: Because the statue is made of copper (铜), the same metal used to make many kinds of coins.
3. Have people attempted to deal with the patina?
Key: The Statue of Liberty still has its copper shade underneath its patina, but no attempts have been made to remove it as it actually protects the metal.
4. What is the function of mentioning the Capital Museum in Beijing?
Key: To prove the fact that the look of patinated metal is enjoyed so much that some designers even try to give bronze and copper that familiar blue-green look.

IV. Language Study

1. Oxidation is a process where a material or substance (物质) is changed after being exposed (暴露) to oxygen (氧气) and water in the air.

2. Do you think smartphones are a blessing or a disguise? What are the possible advantages and disadvantages of smartphones?

3. Read Paragraphs 1-4 and fill in the blanks.
A common      People can't live without smartphones due to their various 2. _____.
People were interested to see what the iPhone X had to 3. _____.
  1. _______    The iPhone has changed how people 4. ____.
People start to build 5. ______ with smartphones.

Key: 1. phenomenon; 2. functions; 3. offer; 4. interact; 5. relationships

4. Read Paragraphs 5-6 and find out the “objection” to people’s attachment to smartphones.
Key:
ØSmartphones are phones after all; they are just devices to talk to other people on.
ØSmartphones are destroying our personal lives. The devices lock us into the “outside” world, and lock us out of the world of family and friends.

Question: How do you understand the sentence in red?
Key:
It means that being attached to our devices causes us to become obsessed with people and things from outside our real lives. Rather than being interested in developing our real relationships, we often spend time checking our phone for messages, or trying to impress strangers on social media with unrealistic photos of our life, etc.

1. Write a summary of Paragraphs 1-4.
Possible version:
With their various functions, smartphones, iPhones in particular, have fascinated the public so much that they have changed the way people interact and are considered as a third hand or an extra eye by some.

Tips on writing a good summary of a short passage:
ØFind out topic sentences of the paragraphs.
ØFind out important ideas of the passage.
ØLeave out the details.
ØTry to organize the important ideas into a complex sentence or two sentences.

2. Discuss and write down the drawbacks brought about by smartphones. You may borrow ideas from Paragraphs 5-6.
Hints:
You may consider the following aspects:

ØPersonal Relationships
ØPotential risks/social problems

Tips on developing ideas:ØFollow the pattern of  “topic sentence + supporting sentences”     Suggested ways of reasoning: Example, assumption, compare and contrast, metaphorØUse transitions to reach the cohesionØAvoid information not related to the central idea.ØUse discourse markers.
However, human’s addiction to smartphones is not without its drawbacks.

3. Discuss and write: How can we avoid the drawbacks discussed in Q2?
Nevertheless, we can surely find ways to enjoy the advantages smartphones bring and avoid their disadvantages._____________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Be a master of your phone rather than a slave to it.

1. Polish three parts and organize them into a coherent passage.
2. Find another passage with the structure of “phenomenon/problem-disadvantages-solutions”; try to analyze its structure and summarize each part.

Possible version of answers to the writing Task 1, 2 and 3:
With their various functions, smartphones, iPhones in particular, have fascinated the public so much that they have changed the way people interact and are considered as a third hand or an extra eye by some.
However, human’s addiction to smartphones is not without its drawbacks. Firstly, smartphones easily distract our attention. No matter what we are doing, the moment the phone makes a sound, many of us find it hard to resist the temptation to read the message or answer the call. Even when the phone is in sleep mode, many of us check it every few seconds just to make sure not a single message is missed. In the long term, it will be hard for us to stay focused. Secondly, smartphones, as it is, distance our relationships and make us lonelier. We quickly “like” friends’ posts on social media but can hardly find a person in our entire friends list to have a heart-to-heart talk with. Friends get together but everyone is glued to his or her phone without a live conversation. Ironically, we enjoy the versatility of smartphones at the cost of our personal relationships.
Nevertheless, we can surely find ways to enjoy the advantages smartphones bring and avoid their disadvantages. First, there are some easy ways to prevent smartphones from interrupting us. Phones can be set in silent mode and placed with the screen down when we are working on important tasks. Also, we can arrange a regular phone-free period. Second, we should strike the right balance in life. Being engaged in activities certainly strengthens social bonds. Switching off our phone when spending time with loved ones is a wise choice. Be a master of your phone rather than a slave to it.

Linking the three questions in class together, please present a well-organized and coherent article. The following is a possible version.

Media giant Disney is testing special cameras placed inside cinemas to track the audience’s emotional reactions during a movie. It’s hoped that this new method will help collect more detailed feedback in test screenings, compared to traditional methods such as questionnaires.
Test screenings are highly valued in the movie industry, and several well-known movies have been greatly changed following feedback. Take E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial as an example. Audience feedback led to the original version, in which E.T. died instead of going home in spaceship being completely altered. If it weren’t for this, the film may not have been so successful.
From my point of view, I am in favor of Disney’s high-tech test screening method. For one thing, it is better for audience members in that it lets them enjoy the movie and leave, instead of having to rack their brains recalling their feelings and filling in questionnaires afterwards. For another, as the cameras can sense even the slightest facial movements, it enables film companies to collect much more detailed and accurate feedback, meaning they can fine tune their movies even better than before. As for privacy, companies should let test audiences know about the cameras in advance, letting them choose whether they still want to take part or not, and have procedures in the place to protect the data.

Homework:
参考范文:
As is indicated in the graph, the box-office income of Chinese films increased constantly from 2012 to 2015, but its growth, for one reason or another, slowed down in 2016.
The increase in the box-office income can be attributed to a number of factors. The quality of life has improved and watching films is regarded as a good means of entertainment. Besides, filming technology has advanced and more quality films are on offer. Moreover, the internet plays an important part. On the internet, people can seek information about their favorite stars and buy tickets at a discount as well, which is both time-saving and economical.
However, the film market may witness a slowdown in the near future. Cinemas have gradually given way to the rise of the internet and cellphones, and the ticket price is on the increase. Therefore, the film industry should make greater efforts to attract more viewers.
