Pleasure from pain (P6)
邯郸市第一中学  王永仙

I. Warming up
Spicy food is popular in many countries. Do you like it?

II. Pre-reading
Read the title and the first paragraph and predict what the article is about.
Pleasure from pain
We eat something very spicy, our mouth burns, then our nose gets runny and our eyes start to water.

III. Fast-reading
Read the title and the first sentence of each paragraph and find out what questions the article answers.

IV. Close-reading
Read the article and answer the following questions.
1.Why do we get teary eyes, a gushing nose and a burning mouth when we eat something very spicy?
All spicy foods come from plants which contain spicy compounds to keep animals from eating them. Coming into contact with these compounds causes our nose and eyes to feel irritated and go into defense mode. The tears and mucus produced by our body are to protect us.

2. Why is it that humans are the only animals to eat chilies?
According to BBC News, the human body responds to spicy food by releasing endorphins (内啡肽) – chemicals that create a sense of happiness.

3. How many Chinese people are chili eaters?
Almost half of the national population are chili eaters.

4. What can we do to relieve the symptoms caused by spicy food?
Live Science suggested that the easiest way to put out the fire in your mouth is with dairy products, such as milk or yogurt. Equally effective is a spoon of sugar, according to Live Science.

Sentence analyzing
1. When we come into contact with the compounds in spicy food, our nose and eyes may also feel irritated and go into defense mode, producing tears or mucus to protect themselves.
分析:When 引导时间状语从句,producing作伴随状语,它和主句的主语our nose and eyes是主动关系。
翻译: 当我们接触到辛辣食物中的复合物时,我们的鼻子和眼睛也会感觉痒痒的,并进入防御模式,产生泪水和粘液以保护我们自己。

2. So if we know that our body will react to chilies this way, why is it that humans are the only animals to eat them?
分析:if 引导条件状语从句,why is it that 为强调句型。
翻译: 所以如果我们知道我们的身体将会对辣椒作出这样的反应,为什么人类是唯一吃辣椒的动物呢。

3. However, as Live Science reported, it’s been proved that water will just make you feel worse by spreading the spicy component around your mouth.
分析:as 引导非限定性定语从句,it 为形式主语, that引导主语从句。
翻译: 然而,正如《生活科学》报道,已经证实喝水只会让人感觉更难受,因为水会让这种辛辣的复合物扩散到整个口腔。

V. Post-reading
Discuss in groups of four what you like and don’t like about spicy food; for example, whether you think the issues caused by spicy food are worth it for the taste.

Sample:
Generally speaking, volunteering means devoting one's time, talent and support to whatever causes one feels strongly about.
Personally, I once took on voluntary work in a library, which I still regard as a valuable experience in my life. In the summer vacation when I was 13 years old, instead of having fun with friends and blowing off steam, I took my mother’s advice and became a volunteer. Since books never fail to fascinate me, I chose to volunteer in a library. There, I helped to clean the shelves, classify new books and keep books in order. Through the experience, not only did I come across many good books but I also made new friends with the same interest as me. Above all, I got to do my part to change the world for the better.
Speaking of the significance of volunteering, I believe what matters is not what activities we take part in but what valuable lessons we get from such experiences. By volunteering, we are able to help others as well as meet new people. Moreover, it can help develop our social skills. In addition, the more we give, the happier we feel. As Gandhi put it, the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose. With more people committed to volunteering, there is no doubt that our society will become more harmonious and peaceful.
