Great Death of Culture (P4)

江苏省南菁高级中学 范克强

Pre-reading: Brainstorming
Ø What museums have you been to before?
Ø What was your impression of them?
Ø What roles do you think museums play?
Ø What if they were lost in the fire?

As we all know, museums play an important role in our everyday lives. The purpose of modern museums is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display items of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the public.
On Sept 2, a big fire broke out at the National Museum of Brazil, the oldest scientific institution in the country, in Rio de Janeiro.

While-reading: task 1
Read the passage and then fill in the following blanks.

Reading: task 2
Which was considered one of South America’s oldest human fossils among surviving items?
It was an 11,500-year-old skull called Luzia.

Why were the audio recordings of local languages lost in the fire so important?
Because the recordings were about local languages from all over Brazil. Some of these recordings, now lost, were of languages that are no longer spoken.

Reading: task 3

Why did Bernard Mello Franco comment that the tragedy was a sort of national suicide and a crime against their past and future generations ?
The reason is that the Museum of Brazil housed valuable and irreplaceable collections of the country, which represented the country's long-lasting history and magnificent culture. As the collections were lost in the big fire, the younger and future generations no longer have a chance to learn the country's history and develop their patriotism.

Writing: task 1

Write a short summary of the article and try to be as concise as possible.
The passage reported on the big fire that damaged the National Museum of Brazil, the great losses it has caused to the whole nation, and people’s reactions to it.

Writing: task 2
Discuss with your partner about the purposes and importance of museums and then put your ideas down into an article.

You can refer to the following expressions and transitional phrases.
Useful expressions
significant roles; stimulate children’s curiosity and enlarge their scope; be related to cultural protection ...

Transitional phrases:
In summary/ In a word/ In conclusion; It is commonly believed that; Nevertheless/ However...

Sample Writing
It’s almost impossible to talk of human civilization without mentioning the significant roles museums play. From London to Paris, from Beijing to New York, museums attract millions of visitors from all over the world annually.
Obviously, museums have become vital parts of our lives. They are where people can get educated and entertained. Nowadays, more and more parents feel like taking their children to visit museums on weekends, because they find the collections displayed there can stimulate their children’s curiosity and enlarge their scope.
Museums also open a door for people to learn about human civilization. As we know, a great amount of cultural relics and antiques are exhibited in museums. While there, visitors are informed of the achievements our ancestors have made. It’s hard to find a better place than a museum to protect these symbols of human history and culture.
In summary, as the symbol of human civilization, museums play a very significant role in our lives. I do believe that as time goes by, people will come to realize the value and significance of museums even more.

Critical thinking
If you were the owner of one of the valuable items of cultural importance lost in the big fire, what would you say to humankind, especially to the younger generations, to avoid this tragedy from happening again?
