What’s the main idea of the passage?

The passage shows the popularity of cats among different countries and analyzes why modern young people prefer cats over dogs.

How do you understand the famous saying There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.

That means music and cats are indispensable (必不可少的) in our daily lives and they play an important part in helping people get rid of the pain and sorrow in life.

Why do young people show a preference for cats over dogs?

It may be down to how young people identify with themselves. In other words, modern  young people think of the independent attitude of cats as something they treasure more.
