Politics uncovered (P1)
烟台第二中学  李欣桐
I. Lead in
Are you aware of any political issues?
•Process of selection. (representatives)
•Put out political fires. (solve problems)
•The real condition of being a leader.
•……
What is your impression of political issues?
•HBO’s Veep  has been making US presidential election into a comedy.
•Debuted in 2012, Veep follows the daily life of Selina Meyer, the fictional vice president (or “Veep” for short) of the US.
II. Fast reading
Read the text quickly and explain the meaning of the title “ Politics uncovered” ?
Through the TV comedy Veep, politics are unveiled, showing the humor in politics.
•What is Meyer’s situation in the show?
•How does the show find humor in the darker side of politics?
•Why is Veep refreshing?
•What do we know about the final season of Veep ?
III. Detailed reading
1. What is Meyer’s situation in the show?
We see that as much as Meyer wants to have an influence, she – despite being the second-in-command of the country – is constantly ignored by the president and left out of important meetings. Although Meyer herself isn’t exactly capable: She has to put out political fires every once in a while but usually ends up making things worse.
2. How does the show find humor in the darker side of politics?
The show finds humor in a much darker side of politics: the fake smiles, racism and wrongdoings of politicians.
When a mass shooting happens in the show, for example, instead of feeling shocked, Meyer is actually glad, because she feels it may help to distract people from her own disasters.
3. Why is Veep refreshing?
Veep is refreshing not just for the way it handles politics, but also because it features a woman as its lead politician, especially in a comedy, considering the fact that comedies used to be an all-male territory.
•There are more opportunities for women in comedic roles than 20 or 30 years ago.
•There’re more opportunity for roles that are not just the wife – the angry wife – or the girlfriend – the cute, hot girlfriend.
4. What do we know about the final season of Veep?
In the 7th and final season of Veep, ____ came out on March 31, Meyer is finally running for president. Fans are speculating over ______ she will make it to the Oval Office.

Have a hot cup of hope (P5)
烟台第二中学  李欣桐
I. Lead in
Guess: A traditional drink for the Chinese
茶:tea
绿茶:green tea
红茶:black tea
Each year around Tomb Sweeping Day, or Qingming Festival, villagers busy themselves picking leaves in tea gardens in southern China.
You may be surprised, however, that the UK also has tea traditions.
•The UK has been in love with tea since the 17th century, when merchants first brought it to the country. The average British person drinks more than 900 cups a year.
•In demographic (人口特性的) terms, Britain is quite varied.
•There are significant differences between people according to region, ethnicity (种族) and age.
II. Fast reading
Read the text quickly and answer the question.
What does the title “Have a hot cup of hope ” mean? (give evidence)
The question refers to both “afternoon tea,”which is drunk by a small minority of the British people and  “Builder’s tea”, which is a heavily sweetened tea drunk by the working population. When trouble arises, someone will invariably say, “Let’s put the kettle on.” Nothing looks bad when you have a warm cup – or mug – of tea in your hands.
“Where there’s tea, there’s hope.”
III. Detailed reading
Read the text carefully and judge whether the following statements are T(True) or F(False).
1. There are significant differences, among which a very basic difference – social difference – is reflected in the ways that people drink tea.
2. People in upper class are generally finely dressed ladies and gentlemen, sitting down with tiny sandwiches, drinking “Builder’s tea” from delicate porcelain cups, with their pinkie fingers raised.
3. Most tea is drunk by a small minority of the nation’s people. These people enjoy tea at their leisure, drinking the same kind of tea as the working population.
4. The tea is usually heavily sweetened, perhaps because sugar is a source of energy – and people at work always need energy.
5. No matter what kind of tea people drink, nor where they drink it, all tea-drinking in the UK has a kind of ritual significance.
