I. Lead in
Do you like physics? How about physical experiments?
How would you like engineers to help you with an aircraft design?
Lockheed Martin engineers went to a high school to help students complete projects that had them working up plans for a prototype aircraft.
II. Reading for main idea
What is the main idea of the article?
Lockheed Martin engineers inspire Lake Nona High School students with hands-on project help.
III. Reading for details
1. What was the purpose of the Lockheed Martin engineers’ trip to the school?
“STEM is growing even faster than just five years ago,” said Lockheed Martin biomechanist Christine Sleppy. “It’s important to make it more available to students at a younger age.”
2. What can this help bring to the students according to Barbara Jenkins?
personal interaction with professionals
real learning in the engagement
the tools that are necessary for them to succeed
preparations for when they graduate to be ready to step into these high-tech engineering jobs
3. What did the gift mean to Valentina?
The gift was a way to encourage Valentina to pursue her dreams. It made the point that the obstacles she faced were tiny compared to the universe.
IV. Understanding sentences
1. …who admitted to struggling with physics and math.
此处admit to doing=admit doing,译为:“承认···”,若为承认做过,形式多为                                                 “struggle with/ against” 译为“和···斗争”,“为···斗争”为“struggle for”
He admitted (to) having stolen the car.
2. The tough times had put an end to her efforts to pursue a career in aerospace engineering.
此处“put an end to= bring an end to”,动作为主动,若结束的事做主语,用“come to an end”.
The talks may bring an end to the violence.
The summer vacation came to an end at last.
3. This opportunity made me want to work harder to get to the goal I have been trying to reach since I was 5 years old.

4.Lockheed Martin engineers went to her school to help students complete projects that had them working up plans for a prototype aircraft that could help in a simulated humanitarian aid mission.
此处“have sb/sth doing sth”译为“让……做……”,也可用“have sb/sth do”而“have sb/ sth done”为“使……被”,一般事情为别人所作。
乔让我给他找辆车。
Joe had me find a car for him.
You’d better have your hair cut/ bad tooth pulled out.
5.Jenkins watched her students work in teams, as they brought to life what had been 2D images of vehicles using modeling clay (雕塑土), wire and aluminum foil (铝箔).
此处“watch sb do sth”为感官动词+宾语+宾补,类似的词有see/hear/observe等,宾补形式为do/doing/done;“as” 此处引导时间状语从句,译为“当……”;“bring to life”译为“使……活过来”。
他看到一个男子被杀。
He saw a man killed.
6. It made the point that the obstacles she faced were tiny compared to the universe.
相比”,也可用“compared with”而“compare…to…” 比作”

Our first view of a black hole (P6)
I. Lead in
What do you know about black holes?
A black hole is a region of spacetime exhibiting such strong gravitational effects that nothing—not even light - can escape from inside it.
What do you know about the picture below?
This is the first image of a black hole. We got it on April 10, 2019.
Event Horizon Telescope
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a large telescope array(阵列) consisting of a global network of radio telescopes. The EHT project combines data from several stations around Earth. The first image of a black hole, at the center of M87 galaxy, was published by the EHT Collaboration on April 10, 2019.
II. Reading for main idea
Summarize the main idea of the article.
How the first picture of a black hole was produced.
Please find words to conclude the article.
a black hole
the first image
the difficulty
the approach
the significance
III. While-reading
Read the text carefully and then answer the following questions.
1. Why doesn’t the photo show a black hole itself?
That’s because a black hole, with its great density, produces such a powerful gravitational field that nothing – not even the light – can escape its pull. It’s only when surrounding objects, like gas, dust, stars and light are sucked  into one, that it is possible to get a photograph.
2. Why was it difficult to get the picture?
The first challenge lay in the remoteness of the black hole. Trying to get the photo was like “trying to spot an orange on the surface of the moon with the naked  eye (肉眼),” Time reported.
3. What did astronomers do to solve the problem?
In order to solve this problem, astronomers placed eight observatories in four continents. The collection of the data was completed in barely a week, but the analysis of it took the better part of the past two years. The process involved transferring the data to different computer groups in order to produce the final image.
4. What is the significance of the picture?
As Time put it, the picture may “open one more tiny crack ” onto the secret of the universe. The final image is a big deal. As the Guardian noted, “it predicts a revolution in our understanding of the universe’s most enigmatic objects.” One day, if we can uncover their secret, humans might “use black holes to time travel forward”, according to National Geographic. We may be able to find out what the world will be like in the future.
IV. Understanding sentences
1. We knew they existed, and that they swallowed up everything around them…
The report shows that we are making some progress but that we need make greater efforts.
2. …, but it was on April 10 that we finally got to see a black hole in a photograph. /It’s only when surrounding objects, like gas, dust, stars and light are sucked (吸入) into one, that it is possible to get a photograph.
强调动词则用do/does/did等形式。
She does come from a European country.
3. The first challenge lay in the remoteness of the black hole.
Happiness does not lie in how many possessions you own.
4. This global approach was key to getting the picture.
organizations which take a positive approach to creative thinking
V. Post-reading
Please explain the article to your partner using the following key words.
a black hole/ the first image/ the difficulty/ the approach/ the significance
VI. Homework
1. Review the language points.
2. Tell your partner how the first picture of a black hole was made.
