Replace lost limbs (P6)
Lead in

What are they?
What are they used for?
They are prostheses used for people who lose an arm or a leg.

What kind of impact do you think the disability will have on those people?
They can’t have the same life as normal people.

With the use of a prosthetic limb, can people get their normal life back?
Not necessarily, because they can’t restore the sense of touch.

Let’s read the passage and find out whether there are more advanced products that can address this issue.

Read for the main idea
Now read the passage and figure out what it talks about. (What is the main idea?)
A group of Swedish scientists created a new product named neuromusculoskeletal prosthesis. It allows people to experience sensations of touch in mind-controlled arm prostheses.

Read for detailed information
Read the passage again and answer the following questions.
1. Fill in the blanks and complete the basic information about the new product.

2. How does the new product work?
The prosthesis is connected directly to a user’s nerves, muscles and skeleton. The sensation of touch becomes possible by stimulating nerves that used to be connected to the biological hand before the amputation.

3. Fill in the blanks according to the passage.

Key:planted; measure; Collected; transmitted; nerves; characteristics; perceive

4. What is the progress and significance of this new product?
The ability of the patients to discern smaller changes in the intensity of sensations has improved. The prosthesis is qualified as a clinically viable replacement for a lost arm.
be qualified as:适用于做…;有做…

5. What makes restoring the sense of touch difficult?
The challenge is creating neural interfaces that can seamlessly transmit large amounts of artificially collected information to the nervous system, in a way that the user can experience sensations naturally and effortlessly.

Read for language and grammar
1. Seven years ago, a group of Swedish scientists created a new type of prostheses, which has since been tried out on three patients to see how they perform in people’s daily lives.
Test yourself
1.  It all depends on _______ we solve the problem.
2.  We are worrying about _______ we should do.
3.  They couldn’t understand _______ I refused it.
4.  The problem is _______ we should stay.
(Key: how; what; why; where)

1. _____ an arm means losing the ability to grab as well as losing the sense of touch.
2. But _____ the sense of touch has been quite a challenge – until now.
3. When a patient grabs an object, for example, force sensors _____ in the prosthetic thumb would measure contact and pressure.
(Key: Losing; restoring; planted)

1. According to the study, this is the first time that people ___ have had an arm amputated can experience sensations of touch in mind-controlled arm prostheses.
2. The collected information would then be transmitted to the patient’s nerves ____ lead to the brain.
3. In this way, the patient can “feel” the characteristics of the object being touched and perceive its pressure against the prosthetic hand, _____ can be crucial when handling delicate objects
(Key:who; that; which)

4. Translation
According to the study, this is the first time that people who have had an arm amputated can experience sensations of touch in mind-controlled arm prostheses.

In this way, the patient can “feel” the characteristics of the object being touched and perceive its pressure against the prosthetic hand, which can be crucial when handling delicate objects – an egg, for example.

The challenge is creating neural interfaces that can seamlessly transmit large amounts of artificially collected information to the nervous system, in a way that the user can experience sensations naturally and effortlessly.
