Beyond words

Elegant and smooth, Japanese Jazz-pop singer Mika Nakashima’s songs are pleasant to listeners’ ears even if they don’t truly understand what she is singing about. But they love what they hear. The 25-year-old is beginning to dominate (统治) Chinese teenagers’ music players with her soothing (舒服的) melodies.
Mika, whose music is primarily pop with a touch of jazz, has been one of the Japanese music industry’s most successful artists. Her low and emotive (动情的) voice, gentle nature and sophisticated (成熟的) style have earned her an important place in the hearts of young music lovers.
Mika’s career started with a bang. As the youngest of three children, she dreamed of a singing career from a young age. She dropped out of high school and began to pursue her dream by making a demo-tape (样带) to a record company, which gave her the chance. At age 17, Mika was chosen from around 3,000 girls to be the heroine (女主角) of a nationwide TV drama, Kizudarake No Love Song (《新宿伤痕恋歌》) in 2001. Her first song Stars, which was the drama’s theme song, helped her arrive on the Japanese music scene with great success and won her best newcomer awards the next year.
Not only is Mika talented in music, she is also an accomplished (成熟的) actress. In 2005, Mika landed the big screen role to play the character Nana, based on the popular manga (漫画) of the same name. The manga fans were thrilled to see Mika perfectly act out the spirit of the proud, determined Nana.
Mika also sang the movie’s theme song, Glamorous Sky (《魅惑天空》). Like Nana in the movie — Mika also rocks! Glamorous Sky is different from her usual light and mellow voice but atracted a lot of new fans. The catchy rock beat with heavy usage of guitar, drums and bass, combined with the beautifully light voice of Mika made her the top-selling female singer of the year.
As her lotus tattoo (纹身) represents, Mika grows, blooms and becomes more beautiful as time goes by.

Trouble on the pitch

Many football fans watched Chinese Super League matches during the National Day holiday. But fans in Wuhan were greatly disappointed to find themselves without a team to support.
In a surprise decision, Wuhan Guanggu announced on October 2 that the club is to pull out of the Super League. The move is in protest of a punishment handed out by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) to the club's veteran defender Li Weifeng.
Li received a suspension following a scuffle with a player from the opposing Beijing Guo'an team during a September 28 game. Both players were given an eight-game suspension and 8,000 yuan fines by the CFA.
Li, 30, is a former captain of China's national team and was part of the Olympic team in August. Experts believe that the Wuhan team will struggle in the games without Li. After announcing the withdrawal, Wuhan Guanggu took the matter to the National Sports Bureau and complained against the CFA for unfair treatment. However, the bureau ruled in favor of the association.
After the Wuhan club announced its withdrawal, the CFA fought back by disqualifying its team from all national games. The news was met with dismay by local football fans and players. Tens of thousands of fans hit the streets, shouting slogans like "Dismiss the Football Association!" and "The Super League is Finished!"
The incident is the latest to mar China's football league, which has been filled with corruption and gambling scandals. And this year it is facing a sharp drop of fan attendance, especially after the men's national Olympic team failed to win a match at the Beijing Games. The men's national team has also already failed to qualify for World Cup 2010.
"We do not see any hope for China's soccer. We doubt whether China will be able to make it to the World Cup finals any time in the foreseeable future," said an online post at Sina.com.
Under huge pressure from football fans, CFA vice president Xie Yalong stepped down last month. But many don't think things will become better after Xie leaves if the management system does not change.
"Chinese football has fallen into a vicious circle where problems were suppressed with an iron fist. Now it's time for change," said a comment on Xinhua.net.

Paintings take you on a trip

Painting is an art that can best represent a country's culture. Chinese traditional landscape painting is a good example. It goes beyond a simple form to convey Chinese ideals and philosophy.
Chinese traditional painting seldom follows the convention of central focus. A painting is there for the viewer to enter. He can enjoy himself in the unique world that artists choose to depict. One can start at the bottom and follow little trails heading to a temple or a farmer hut, then continue and walk through the mountains and pass by waterfalls and rivers.
Chinese landscape paintings usually include small human figures that blend harmoniously into the vast world around them. Man and nature complement each other to reach a state of balance. The essential philosophy is the unity of heaven, earth and human beings.
Water and ink are two unique features of Chinese brush painting. Ink is used to represent different colors. An artist uses black, white, dry, wet, thick and thin ink to express the color. For example, an artist will use thick ink to draw closer flower petals, while using thin ink to depict more distinct petals. Dark and thick ink does not describe values of darkness, but rather represents the strength and vividness of color. For instance, when painting shrimp, an artist uses the unique features of rice paper (宣纸) and ink to suggest the translucent quality of the shrimp shell.

Talking machines

Can machines think? That was the question asked by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to talk with humans in an experiment that will try to prove that the answer is yes.
In the Turing test a machine tries to fool judges into believing that it could be human. The test is performed by making a text-based conversation on any subject. If the computer's responses are indistinguishable from those of a human, it has passed the Turing test and can be said to be "thinking".
No machine has yet passed the test devised by Turing, who helped to crack German military codes during the Second World War. But at 9am this Monday, six computer programs will answer questions asked by human volunteers at the University of Reading, UK in a bid to become the first recognized "thinking" machine. If any program succeeds, it will be the most significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence since the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.
The six computer programs taking part in the test are called Alice, Jerome, Elbot, Eugene Goostman, Jabberwacky and Ultra Hal. Their designers will be competing for an 18-carat gold medal and $100,000 offered by the Loebner Prize in Artificial Intelligence.
The test will be carried out by human "interrogators", each sitting at a computer with a split screen: one half will be operated by an unseen human, the other by a program. The interrogators will then begin separate, simultaneous text-based conversations with both of them on any subjects they choose. After five minutes they will be asked to judge which is which. If they get it wrong, or are not sure, the program will have fooled them.
A program needs only to make 30 percent or more of the interrogators unsure of its identity to pass the test, based on Turing's own criteria.
I. Pre-reading:
Besides human beings, what else do you suppose can think?
II. Read the passage and find detailed information about the test.
