  Isn't it exciting?
Two years ago, Michael Perham, 14, from Britain achieved such a dream.
The story about Michael Perham sailing across the Atlantic.
  1. Michael Perham, a 14-year-old from Hertfordshire, was the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic single-handed. He spent more than six weeks on his yacht Cheeky Monkey, contending with giant waves, shark-infested waters and hurricane winds.
  2. The 3,500-mile voyage began on Nov. 18 and was following the trade wind route used by seafarers down the centuries. A problem with a sail on the 28-foot boat delayed his arrival in Antigua by 24 hours.
  3. His dad is an experienced yachtsman. He shadowed the trip and was in regular radio contact with Michael. At home, his mother said: "I've no idea what his next goal will be but I do know he's keen to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats."
  4. His head teacher said: "We're thrilled and delighted. It's an amazing achievement and goes to show what young people can achieve." He added: "We have been keeping students and their parents informed of his progress in our weekly newsletters. His friends have been logging onto his website."

His aim | To sail across the Atlantic | To sail around the world |
          His age | 14 years old | 16 years old |
His boat | A 15-meter long yacht | Much bigger, and harder to handle |
His companion | His father sailing behind him | Alone |

  II. Predicting (2)
Read the first several paragraphs to confirm your prediction. Then find the topic sentence and go on predicting.
The topic sentence of the passage:
The first sentence in Para 1: “An American professor is preparing to market a dog gene therapy.”
What kind of article does this passage belong to?
It’s an introduction of science knowledge.
The topic sentence of the passage:
It may introduce the breakthrough in gene therapy research or the future of gene therapy.
III. Reading
Read the questions first and then read the passage carefully.
  Choose the best answers:
  1. Professor Lee Sweeney is preparing to _____.
  A. allow old dogs to run around like puppies.
  B. create “mighty mice" with enormous muscles and strength in old age.
  C. treat humans’ serious genetic diseases such as muscular dystrophy.
  D. market the treatments to owners of ageing pets.
An American professor is preparing to market a dog gene therapy是文章的主题句, A是主题句的支撑句,B已经试验成功,C是将来的愿望,D是主题句的另一种说法,故选D。
  2. Lee Sweeney’s gene therapy is to _____.
  A. market a gene dog
  B. give an injection of an inhibitor into the liver of animals
  C. transfer poorly functioning genes in animals and humans
  D. stop muscle growth in animals and humans
  3. Prof Sweeney refuses approaches from athletes who will do anything to get their hands on genetic material because _____.
  A. they are now in the stages of getting all the approvals
  B. gene therapy is not yet safe enough for humans
  C. it’s illegal
  D. Gene doping is one of the greatest fears of sports regulators
  4.  According to the passage, we can infer that ____.
  A. an old man can run around like a kid
  B. “mighty mice" will appear in our world
  C. gene dogs will be the best sellers
  D. problems of human trials of gene therapy will be worked out
  答案A。 故选A。
