Types of Housing
There are two main housing options at our university. However, not all programs offer both housing options. Also, your program may not provide housing at all or may not be able to guarantee housing for you.
The home-stay option places a student, or sometimes more than one student, into a local South Korean household. The student lives with his/her host family and participates in aspects of family life like meals and chores (杂务).
Home-Stay
Pros:
* Get to experience real family life with diverse types of families (traditional with children, single-parent, etc.)
* Residence could be spacious
* Laundry done for you
* Home cooking
* Social and local connections
* Family provides help, advice, and tips
* Best way to learn a language
Cons:
* Dealing with a real family’s real problems
* Residence could be very humble
* Lack of privacy
* Chores and rules
* Few meal options/portion sizes
* Phone access
* Rules about having overnight guests, smoking, drinking, etc.
The residence hall/dorm option places a student into a single room, possibly with a roommate. Students often share a bathroom and sometimes have a meal plan with communal (公共的) dining facilities.
Dormitory
Pros:
* Meeting new people, both local and international
* Cooking for yourself means eating what you want whenever you want
* Not having to cook, or go to the market, because you have a meal plan instead
* Participating in group activities with other dorm residents
* Feeling less lonely or homesick because you’re constantly with other young people
* Located close to campus
* Practicing the local language with other students
