Warm-up
You are going to be introduced to a new sport. Let's check it out.

•Free climbing is when a rock climber ascends (登上) a cliff using only his hands, and feet to make upward progress and to support his or her body in the vertical world. Free climbing is done both with and without a rope, although most climbers use a rope for personal safety and to avoid the fatal (致命的) effects of gravity.

•As free climbing is a physically challenging extreme sport, do you think women are equally capable of being successful? Why or why not?

Two women achieved their feats in the field dominated by men. Let's take a look.

Read and think
Read the article and find the answers to the questions.

1. Who are the two female climbers mentioned in the article? What feats do they achieve?

•US climber Emily Harrington reached the top of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park within a day, becoming the first woman to free-climb the Golden Gate route.
•Legendary Austrian climber Angela Eiter climbed the unknown face she calls Madame Ching in her home country.

2. Did they meet with any difficulties psychologically or physically? How did they overcome them?

•Emily Harrington said “I spent a lot of years feeling like I didn’t belong, like maybe I hadn’t earned my place to be a Yosemite climber,” which means she had some self-doubt.
“But throughout this experience I learned that there is no belonging or not belonging, no formula to achievement up there.”
•As for Eiter, the route was free of traces. Worse still, the rock there is fragile and some holds had to be fixed with glue. After intensive indoor training to visualize (构思) the route and build up her strength, Eiter, who stands 154 cm and weighs 46 kg, made it.

3. What do the phrases “level the playing field” and “free of traces” mean? How did you work them out?

•Given the explanation, “Women’s superior strength-to-weight ratio helps offset anything we may lack in power or reach, bridging the gap between the sexes,” we can conclude the phrase means ensuring that people are competing fairly, with no one having special advantages.

•Given the explanation, “That means Eiter had to search for the holds and predict how the moves were going to play out by herself,” we know that there was no existing paths for Eiter.

•Tips: When you come across an unfamiliar word or expression, take it easy. The following text will give you some clues.

Practice makes perfect

1. Animosity, a feeling of dislike, developed among the musicians, causing the group to disband.
2. The perimeter, or the distance around the circle, was exactly 16 inches.
3. Knowing that the slightest mistake meant losing his job, the waiter carried the expensive wine glasses gingerly from the kitchen.
4. Mary was always adroit at dealing with others. Sandra, on the other hand, lacked Mary's social diplomacy.

Key: 1. 敌意; 憎恶  2. 外缘;周长  3. 小心翼翼地  4. (待人接物)精明的

4. What is the significance of the rising number of female climbing enthusiasts?

•This battle with oneself embodies the spirit behind the sport. “Maybe that’s why more women feel more empowered to find their own way, break free of the mold, and climb what we want to climb. Women have decided to follow their hearts.”

Critical thinking
Recently, a spirited female pilot named Song Yin has grabbed public attention. As one of the only two female pilots in our Sea Search and Rescue Team, a field dominated by men, Song has broken through and achieved a great feat--365-24, nearly 200 people rescued in 10 years.

Share your opinions on female empowerment.
