Activity 1 Lead-in 
A lot of activities have been put on hold due to the pandemic, such as choir rehearsals. Can you figure out ways to solve this problem?

Activity 2 Skimming 
Read the passage quickly and find what the main idea of the text.
La Voce Ballo, Bemidji High School’s all-women show choir, adapted to changes during the pandemic. 

Activity 3  Scanning
Read the passage in detail and answer the following questions. 
1. How did La Voce Ballo work during the pandemic?
They did virtual rehearsals and online auditions. They learned choreography and sang and danced in masks.
They had a computer set up in the middle of the room with students tuning in. They’d have half of their students coming in person, and half joining online.

2. What is one of the marked differences between LVB and the other choirs?
It is the sister-like relationship the members share. During full distance learning, for example, the group participated in a “Secret Sister” gift exchange, similar to a “Secret Santa”, within the choir and dropped off gifts at each others’ homes. 

3. What was the hardest part of online rehearsals?
The hardest part of online rehearsals was not being able to hear the other students singing, as they generally turned off their individual microphones during these video sessions.

4. What was one benefit of online rehearsals? 
Students had learned the music much more thoroughly than in other seasons as they couldn’t rely on someone else.

Activity 4  Discussion
What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of virtual rehearsals compared with in-person rehearsals? 
Advantages
Provide a way to sing together and keep the sense of community during the pandemic;
Involve a wider range of members  regardless of location;
Urge singers to rely on themselves;

Disadvantages
Unstable connections;
Less personal contact;

Activity 5  Language focus 
Analyze the following sentences. 
1. Walking into the choir room during an LVB rehearsal, you’d surely witness an atmosphere full of laughter, mask-covered smiles, vocal warm-ups and girls braiding each others’ hair.
走进排练中的合唱教室,你一定会看到这样的场景:教室里充满了笑声,孩子们口罩下的笑容,大家在做发声练习,女孩子们互相编辫子。
下划线部分为动词-ing短语作状语,可以改写为If you walk into the choir room during an LVB rehearsal.

2. We have a computer set up in the middle of the room with students tuning in.
我们在教室中间放一台电脑,学生们都接入进来。

Eg. She rushed downhill with the breeze blowing on her face. 
The father hurried to go back home with his children waiting for food anxiously. 
3. However, one perk of this, Kanani noted, was that she felt she had learned the music much more thoroughly than in other seasons. 
然而,Kanani说,一个额外的收获是她感觉自己的音乐学习比其他季更加全面透彻。
下划线部分为表语从句。
Eg. The reason was that he didn’t receive the message.
