Peace in a poet’s words (P4-5)

Pre-reading

Who do we call the “poet of poets” ?

Do you know any poems written by Tagore?

 

While reading

   He started to write poems (诗歌) at the age of 8. He was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

1. start to do sth./start doing sth.

    begin to do sth./begin doing sth.

    表示开始某一动作时，后面跟不定式或者动名词时，表达     的意思是一样的。但表示开始一段长期的动作或者习惯性的动作时，动名词的形式较为常见。

例如：The child started to cry/crying.

2.at the age of 的意思和用法

   at the age of  在…岁时，一般用于过去时中

   He became a doctor at the age of 27.

 

He is known as the “poet of poets”. Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is one of the world’s famous wordsmiths (语言大师). This year is the 160th anniversary (周年纪念) of his birth.

 

known [nəun]=famous 意为 “有名的，众所周知的”

 This place is known for its scenery.这个地方以风景出名。

Tagore’s poems are about nature, humans and love. They are full of imagination (想象力). His poem The Champa Flower (《金色花》), for example, shows a child’s love for his mother. In the poem, the child becomes a champa flower and spends time with his mom.

 

full [ful]  a.满的;(肚子)饱的;完全的;丰富的

短语：be full of = be filled with 充满...... ,装满......

例句：The room was full of people.

  = The room was filled with people.室内挤满了人。

I can't eat any more; I'm full (肚子饱的).

我不能再吃了;我已经饱了

 

His poems are positive (积极的). We sometimes get upset when we miss someone or something. But Tagore wrote: “If you shed (落泪) tears when you miss the sun, you also miss the stars.”

Did you know?

  Tagore was a man of many talents. He was not just a poet, but also a playwright (剧作家), philosopher (哲学家) and composer (作曲家).

 

Not only…but also是英语中比较常见的一个关联词组，用于连接两个表示并列关系的成分，着重强调后者。它的意思是“不仅 … 而且 ...”；其中的also有时可以省略。

Tagore wrote two national anthems – Jana Gana Mana (《人民的意志》) for India and Amar Sonar Bangla (《金色的孟加拉》) for Bangladesh. His work also inspired the Sri Lankan national anthem.

  Tagore loved to travel. During his lifetime, he visited more than 30 countries to spread (传播) Indian culture and literature (文学).

Tagore loved Chinese culture. He visited China three times. He once said he had “left his heart” in China.

In 1924, he was invited to give lectures (演讲) by Chinese scholars Liang Qichao and Cai Yuanpei, marking (标志) his first visit. He gave many speeches during his month-long stay. His most famous speech was given at Tsinghua University. His second and third visits both took place in 1929. The poet Xu Zhimo and other writers received him at that time.

furthest 意为“最遥远的”，它是最高级，原级是far, 比较级是 further
