Pre-reading Is carbon dioxide (CO2) really making Earth warmer? Is climate change really caused by human activities? Is it a myth?
Word bank: myth : something that people believe that does not exist or is false.
Careful reading Read Paragraph 1 and find out whether it is a myth.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is really making Earth warmer. Climate change is really caused by human activities. What shows it is true? This year’s Nobel Prize in physics shows it’s not a myth, it’s true!
Presentation What do you know about them?
Careful reading Read the Paragraph 3 & 4 and finish the tasks.
When did Manabe find that rising CO2 levels could make Earth warmer? In the 1960s.
Manabe works at Princeton University, US. In the 1960s, he made a computer model. It showed that rising CO2 levels (水平) will change temperatures on Earth. In one simple model, they doubled (加倍) CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere. It increased the temperature by more than 2 degrees.
Read the Paragraph 3 & 4 and finish the tasks. 2. Translate the underlined sentences. atmosphere: the mixture of gases that surrounds our planet increase: to become or to make sth greater in amount by: used to show the degree or amount of sth 在一个简单的模型中, 他们将地球大气中的二氧化碳增加了一倍。这使得温度升高了2度多。

3. What role did Manabe’s model play for the later studies? Manabe’s work became the basis for all future climate models.
Sixty years ago, computers were 100,000 times slower than they are today. Manabe’s model needed to be simple but accurate (准确的). “There’s an art,” said Brad Marston from Brown University, “to making a model that is rich enough to give you interesting results, but simple enough to understand it.” Manabe’s work became the basis (基础) for all future climate models.
Read the fifth paragraph and finish the tasks. 3. What is Klaus Hasselmann’s study about? How small changes in weather could add to long-term climate change.
German scientist Klaus Hasselmann also won the prize for climate studies. He studied how small changes in weather, such as a snowstorm (暴风雪), could add to long-term climate change.
Why is awarding the prize to climate studies meaningful? Awarding the prize to climate studies sends a message to world leaders. What is the message? Global warming is resting on solid science.
Awarding the prize to climate studies sends a message to world leaders, said Goran Hansson. He’s the secretary-general (秘书长) of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. That message, Hansson said, is that “global warming is resting on solid (可靠的) science.”
