Gibbons of Hainan (P4)

Pre-reading

Free Talk

Have you ever been to Hainan Island?

Have you ever heard of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park?

While reading

At around 6:00 am every morning, daily life begins for Hainan gibbons (长臂猿). They start their high whistling (吹口哨). Their sounds break the silence of the forests.

Mr Smith was the first to break the silence.

Hainan gibbons are the worlds rarest primates They only live in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. The park has the countrys best-preserved tropical rainforests

rare: [reə(r)] adj.

The bird is now a rare sight in this country.

Now, five families, totaling 36 gibbons, live in the park. But in the 1980s, there were just two families and fewer than 10 gibbons.

total:[ˈtəʊt(ə)l] v.

The club has a total membership of 300.

To save the species, Hainan has restored (恢复) more than 330 hectares (公顷) of gibbon habitat (栖息地) since 2005, planting around 300,000 trees that grow leaves and fruits they eat, China Daily reported. The protected habitat has grown from 21.4 square kilometers in the 1980s to 4,269 sq km today.

species: [ˈspiːʃiːz] n.

There are many different shark species.

Protection work continues, but it is not easy to track the gibbons. They spend their whole lives in the trees. They usually look for food in the canopy (树冠), around 15 meters above the ground.

track: [træk] v.

The research project involves tracking the careers of 400 graduates.

Chinese scientists are using technology to solve the problem. Whistling is a way for Hainan gibbons to mark their territory (领地). The sounds are now being recorded by devices (设备) in the trees and sent to a database (数据库).

mark:[mɑːk] v.

She marked all her books with her name.

The devices can recognize the sounds of the gibbons. Scientists then analyze (分析) the data to learn more about their lifestyles and the ways they express feelings like joy, anger and sadness.

recognize:[ˈrekəɡnaɪz] v. 认识,辨别出;

I recognized him as soon as he came in the room.

Jane Smart, global director of International Union for Conservation of Natures biodiversity (生物多样性) conservation group, said that the recovery of the gibbon population in Hainan shows Chinas achievements in environmental protection.

recovery:[rɪˈkʌvəri] n.
