Can we train cats to do the same tricks?
III. While reading
Read the passage and answer the following questions.
1. Why did Galaxy launch Cat Pawsitive?
To encourage animal shelters to teach cats how to do tricks so that more people will want to adopt them.
2. What are the benefits of teaching cats in animal shelters new tricks?
Firstly, it can make them more attractive to potential parents. Secondly, it’s a good way for them to relieve stress. Lastly, we can help them feel more confident and safe interacting with new people.
3. Is training a cat to do tricks difficult, according to Stephen Holdeman? Why?
No, it is not as hard as we might think. All we need is the right amount of patience, timing and motivation.
4. How does Holdeman teach the cats new tricks?
By using a technique called “operant conditioning”, which causes the cats to associate their actions with getting a reward such as a favorite food or treat.
IV. Discussion
What should we pay the most attention to when teaching cats tricks, in your opinion?
1. Training should be fun for both you and your cat and can help to build your relationship.
2. All training should be rewarded based on whatever will motivate them to show this particular behavior again.
3. Train your cat at a time when they are most active and awake and at a place where they feel comfortable.
4. Practice makes perfect and training can take time, so don’t expect results immediately.
5. It’s also a good idea to break up training into short but regular sessions to keep their attention.
V. Critical thinking
1. What are the meanings of the sentences “shelters can be a scary place for animals” and “big life changes can lead to cats losing their confidence”?
2. Besides teaching cats new tricks, what else can we do to help them? Try to answer using different perspectives.
