What to do if we’re depressed (P4-5)

Pre-reading

Do you ever feel down?

What do you do about it?

Do you ever think you should see a doctor for it?

 

While reading

  Its normal (正常的) to feel down sometimes. Usually, these feelings go away after a while. But, what if they dont? What if they last weeks, months or even longer? You should take it seriously it might be depression (抑郁症).

feel down 感到沮丧,情绪消沉

翻译:时而情绪消沉是正常的

练习:拥挤、喧闹的城市总让我感到情绪低落.

The crowded city makes me feel down.

go away:(症状)消失;离开;

after a while: 不久,过一会儿

翻译:通常,这种感觉不久就会消失。

练习:这种药物能使疼痛消失。

      This medicine will make the hurt go away.

      我过了一会就往回走了,但他还接着走。

      I turned back after a while, but he kept walking.  

 

last [lɑːst]v.  持续; adj.  最近的; 最后的;

翻译:如果它们能持续几周、几个月甚至更长的时间呢?

      Each game lasts about an hour.

 

  Recently, the Ministry of Education said China would include screening (筛查) for depression in students regular (常规的) health checks, to find and prevent mental (心理的) problems.

include  [ɪnˈkluːd]v.  包括; 把…列为…的一部分;

翻译:最近,教育部表示,中国将抑郁症筛查纳入学生的常规健康检查

练习:良好的日常饮食应该包含大量的新鲜蔬菜。

A good diet should include plenty of fresh vegetables. 

 

prevent  [prɪˈvent] v.  阻碍; 预防;

翻译:来发现、预防心理问题。

      It is important to prevent fires from starting.

 

As a mental illness, depression affects (影响) more than a persons mood. It can affect the way they act and how well they do in school or at work. It can affect their energy (精力), sleep and eating, too. If people are depressed, they find it hard to enjoy things like before.

affect [əˈfekt] v.  影响; 使感动; (疾病)感染; 假装;

翻译:作为一种精神疾病,抑郁症不仅影响一个人的情绪。

练习:不良的家庭环境能影响儿童的健康成长.

      A bad home environment can affect a child's happiness. 

 

Most of all, depression affects how people think and feel about themselves. People going through depression often feel alone. It might seem like no one understands or cares. They may feel bad about themselves or blame (责怪) themselves for having a hard time. In serious situations, depression may lead to suicide (自杀).

lead to:把…带到;通向;导致;

翻译:在严重的情况下,抑郁症可能会导致自杀

练习:条条大路通罗马。

     All roads lead to Rome. 

 

But depression is not a persons fault (错误). It can start small. For teenagers, friends, family and school can have major emotional effects (情绪的影响).

effect[ɪˈfekt] :n.  影响; 效果; 所有物; 特效;

                        v. 使发生,引起;

翻译:对于青少年来说,朋友、家人和学校可能会有重大的情感影响

      The effect on coffee prices has been disastrous for the farmers. 

be afraid of: 害怕,担忧

翻译:但是,不要害怕它。

练习:没有什么可怕的。There's nothing to be afraid of. 

      别怕,大胆地说。Don't be afraid of speaking up.

 

However, dont be afraid of it. Depression can be treated with talk therapy (谈话疗法), medication (药物) or a combination (结合) of both. If you are unhappy for more than two weeks and have some symptoms (症状) of depression, it is time to look for help from doctors or others.

treat [triːt] v.  对待,看待; 治疗; 处理; 请客,招待;

           n.  请客,做东; 乐趣;

 翻译:抑郁症可以通过谈话疗法、药物治疗或两者的结合来治疗。

练习:没人知道如何治疗这种可怕的疾病。

      No one knew how to treat his disease. 

 

Its time to:是…的时候了

look for: 寻找(某人或某物)

翻译:是时候向医生或其他人寻求帮助了。
